LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Jun, 2026) The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday directed the Punjab government to submit progress reports every three months regarding the construction and availability of public toilets across the province.
The directive was issued during the hearing of a petition filed by the Judicial Activism Panel, which challenged the inadequate availability of public toilets at public places throughout Punjab.
During the proceedings, the Secretary Local Government submitted a report before the court stating that a total of 1,420 public toilets exist across Punjab. Of these, 1,293 are functional while 127 are non-functional.
According to the report, 672 toilets are designated for men, 568 for women and only five for transgender persons.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>Counsel for the petitioner organization argued that the number of public toilets available across the province was grossly insufficient considering the size of the population and the needs of citizens.
Observing the shortage of sanitation facilities, the court remarked that the government should consider constructing public toilets through public-private partnerships to improve access and maintenance.
The court ordered the relevant authorities to continue efforts for improving sanitation facilities and submit progress reports every three months on measures taken in this regard.
The petition requested the court to direct the authorities to establish adequate public toilet facilities at public places throughout Punjab.
