PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 6th Mar, 2026) Speakers at a provincial dialogue on Friday called for enhanced coordination among state institutions, lawmakers and civil society to strengthen counterterrorism efforts and prevent violent extremism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Organised by the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) with support from the British High Commission, the event brought together parliamentarians, government officials, law enforcement representatives, academics and civil society members to deliberate on improving counterterrorism frameworks, legislative oversight, and preventive strategies against violent extremism.
Syed Kausar Abbas, executive director of SSDO, stressed that sustained engagement between policymakers, oversight bodies and practitioners was vital to address evolving security challenges.
He noted that informed policymaking, stronger legislative engagement and institutional coordination could play a key role in countering terrorism.
Senior legislative expert Mohsin Abbas Syed highlighted existing national and provincial counterterrorism laws, coordination mechanisms among agencies, and the role of provincial governments in implementing policies.
He also emphasised the preventive aspects of the National Action Plan, including reforms in seminaries and the education curriculum.
Panel discussions focused on improving coordination on countering violent extremism, strengthening parliamentary oversight, and guiding youth to prevent radicalisation.
Participants, including representatives from PTI, PML-N, ANP and JUI-F, stressed the importance of legislative support, research-based policymaking and cooperation between government and opposition for lasting peace.
In his concluding remarks, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi highlighted the need for collective action, institutional coordination and civil society participation to enhance the province’s response to terrorism.
He distributed shields among participants in recognition of their contributions to the dialogue.
Participants agreed that stronger cooperation among institutions, effective legislative oversight and investment in preventive measures are essential to address the root causes of violent extremism.
