Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei says both sides had moved forward on several procedural and technical areas

TEHRAN: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June 22nd, 2026) Iran has said that “important steps” were agreed during recent talks with the United States in Switzerland, paving the way for further negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive final agreement, according to state media.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, speaking after intensive four-party discussions in Burgenstock, said both sides had moved forward on several procedural and technical areas.

“In general, important steps were agreed upon to pave the way for the start of negotiations related to the final agreement,” Baghaei stated, adding that Tehran expects “serious commitment” from Washington in the next phase of dialogue.

He said the talks produced agreement on establishing a monitoring and coordination mechanism, described as a “deconfliction cell,” involving mediators to oversee implementation of the ceasefire, particularly in relation to ongoing tensions in Lebanon.

According to Baghaei, both sides also exchanged messages on easing restrictions related to Iranian oil exports and addressing the release of frozen Iranian assets. He said limited progress had been achieved on these financial and energy-related issues.

The discussions also covered maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, with participants agreeing to develop a framework intended to ensure safe commercial shipping through the strategic waterway.

Technical teams from all sides are expected to continue working on implementation details in the coming days, he added.

Mediators said the first round of high-level US–Iran talks concluded in Switzerland after several days of negotiations held under a broader memorandum aimed at extending a fragile ceasefire arrangement.

A joint statement attributed to mediating countries Qatar and Pakistan said both sides had agreed on a roadmap to move toward a final agreement within 60 days. It also confirmed that technical-level discussions would continue in parallel.

The statement added that a mechanism had been discussed to help reduce tensions in Lebanon and improve coordination for safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

The talks were held amid heightened tensions, including political messaging from both sides and concerns over regional security developments. Reports indicated disagreements over sequencing of commitments related to sanctions relief, oil exports, and asset releases.

espite the challenges, diplomatic sources involved in the process said discussions continued through mediators and covered multiple issues, including ceasefire implementation, regional stability, and maritime security arrangements.

Further technical meetings are expected as negotiators attempt to convert the preliminary understanding into a more structured framework for a potential long-term agreement.
