Karachi residents will finally get relief from the gridlock at Karimabad Chowrangi. The Sindh Government confirms the Karimabad Underpass opening date is April 30, 2026. This signal-free corridor will slash travel time between Hasan Square and North Nazimabad, marking a major milestone in the city’s 2026 infrastructure roadmap.

After 17 months of dust and diversions, the end is in sight for the Karimabad underpass. The project began in December 2024. It faced heavy criticism for delays. Relocating K-Electric transmission lines took months. This pushed the original budget from Rs 1.35 billion to Rs 3.81 billion. The Sindh Government funded the entire project. The Karachi Development Authority (KDA) managed the construction.

The KDA followed strict AASHTO standards. Most lanes in Pakistan are 2.78 meters wide. Here, each lane measures 3.05 meters. This extra width ensures smoother flow for heavy traffic. The total width of the dual track is 6.10 meters. It stretches roughly 1.1 kilometers.

The underpass opens for traffic on April 30. However, the work doesn’t stop there. Engineers will start rehabilitating the surrounding surface roads immediately after. They also plan to improve the drainage system. This will prevent the flooding issues we often see during Karachi’s monsoons.
