Karachi may face water shortage power breakdown at Dhabeji pumping station

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) warned that several parts of Karachi could experience water supply disruptions following a power outage at the Dhabeji Pumping Station.

The Dhabeji Pumping Station, the city’s main water intake facility, depends on a continuous electricity supply. Even brief power outages can immediately disrupt water distribution.

According to a KWSC spokesperson, the power outage occurred at about 8:45 a.m. in the third phase of the Dhabeji Pumping Station, causing electricity to that section to be cut off.

The spokesperson said K-Electric had identified the problem as a cable fault at the station and that a technical team had reached the site to repair it.

He added that three pumps at the Dhabeji Pumping Station were temporarily shut down because of the fault, which is expected to affect water supply to several parts of the city.

According to the corporation, the cable fault is likely to cause a temporary shortfall of 75 million gallons of water per day across Karachi.

The spokesperson said the affected areas may include parts of North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Scheme 33.

He added that KWSC is in constant contact with K-Electric to ensure the fault is repaired as quickly as possible and electricity is fully restored.

The spokesperson said all pumps will resume operations immediately after power is fully restored, allowing the city’s water supply to return to normal.

On Thursday, the Sindh Cabinet approved a 40% increase in the cost of a dedicated water pipeline to be laid by the Frontier Works Organization (FWO). The pipeline will supply water to the Defense Housing Authority (DHA) from Dumlotee on the outskirts of Karachi.

Earlier this month, a power outage at the K-2 Pumping Station also forced three major pumps to shut down, disrupting the city’s water supply.
