JICA chief visits Taxila Museum

The newly appointed head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Shinozaki Yusuke on Tuesday visited the Taxila Museum and reviewed ongoing efforts to preserve the ancient Gandhara civilisation's archaeological heritage.

During the visit, Deputy Director, Department of Archaeology and Museums, Asim Dogar, briefed the Japanese official on the historical significance of Taxila, conservation initiatives, museum management and measures being taken to safeguard rare artefacts.

Dogar said Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remained one of South Asia's most important centres of Buddhist civilisation and Gandharan culture, drawing researchers, historians, archaeologists and tourists from around the world.

He also highlighted the Punjab government's large-scale heritage conservation programme covering key archaeological sites in the Taxila Valley.
