Mazhar Chandio, provincial vice president of NPCIHA, has termed India’s alleged violations of the Indus Waters Treaty as unacceptable, warning that such actions could pose a serious threat to regional peace and economic stability

HYDERABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th May, 2026) Mazhar Chandio, provincial vice president of NPCIHA, has termed India’s alleged violations of the Indus Waters Treaty as unacceptable, warning that such actions could pose a serious threat to regional peace and economic stability.

Speaking to APP, Mr Chandio said the treaty, brokered by the World Bank, was an internationally recognised agreement aimed at ensuring equitable distribution of river waters between Pakistan and India and preventing water-related disputes. He alleged that India had continued to undertake measures contrary to the spirit of the accord.

He said Pakistan’s economy heavily relied on agriculture and any disruption in the flow of water allocated to Pakistan could adversely affect agricultural production as well as the country’s overall economy.

Mr Chandio also expressed concern over India’s construction of dams and other water projects, claiming that such measures were affecting the natural flow of water and could undermine regional stability.

He urged the United Nations, the World Bank and other international bodies to take immediate notice of the matter and ensure implementation of the treaty in its true spirit. He added that Pakistan would continue to defend its water rights through diplomatic and legal channels at all available forums.
