HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 6th Mar, 2026) Founder and President of SAFCO Group Dr. Suleman G. Abro has said that the Indus Waters Treaty signed between Pakistan and India in 1960 was a significant international agreement regarding the distribution of river waters between the two countries.
Talking to APP on Friday, he said that any non-serious or unilateral attempts by India regarding the treaty could escalate tensions and further strain relations between the two countries, and Pakistan would never allow the blocking of its share of water.
Dr Abro stated that Pakistan had a clear stance that full compliance with the treaty was essential for regional stability and mutual trust. He noted that international water agreements were being implemented worldwide to ensure that the concerned parties adhere to them. He added that water was as vital to any country’s survival, economy and agricultural system as blood circulate through veins.
He said that under the Indus Waters Treaty, each country had the right to utilize the rivers and water resources allocated to its share. According to the agreement, both sides are bound to respect the established principles of water distribution, continue exchanging information and resolve any potential disputes through peaceful, legal and diplomatic means.
Dr Abro said the treaty was regarded as a fundamental document for the equitable distribution of water resources in the region, adding that Pakistan had expressed serious concerns over unilateral actions by the Indian government. He stressed that any major step regarding water resource management must be taken only after mutual consultation and in accordance with the procedures laid down in the agreement.
He said that Pakistan had made it clear to India that adherence to the treaty was essential, as it was not only part of diplomatic commitments but also crucial for the people of both countries.
He said that in response to India’s actions, Pakistan had the right to effectively use its diplomatic relations to increase pressure on India so that it refrains from taking any unilateral or unreasonable step.
He added that Pakistan should urge India to fully comply with the agreement and avoid any unilateral move that could further escalate tensions in the region.
