ZAMBOANGA CITY: Government officials security forces, local leaders and residents jointly observed the 128th Independence Day in Luuk, Sulu, on Friday reaffirming their commitment to peace, unity, and development across the province.
The main flag-raising ceremony was held at Military Park in Barangay Tandu Bato, led by Luuk Mayor Al-Makram Arbison and Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelina Delos Santos, commander of the Army’s 1102nd Infantry Brigade.
The program featured the traditional Panunumpa sa Watawat (Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag), along with messages highlighting patriotism, civic responsibility, and the sacrifices of national heroes who secured the country’s independence.
Mayor Arbison said the occasion should serve as a reminder of shared responsibility in protecting freedom and working together for a peaceful and progressive society, emphasizing unity and collective development for future generations.
Brig. Gen. Delos Santos underscored the importance of cooperation among government agencies, security forces, and local communities in sustaining peace and stability in Sulu. He said the province stands as an example of progress achieved through collective effort.
He added that Independence Day is not only a tribute to history but also a reflection of Sulu’s continuing journey toward peace, security, and development.
In Basilan, Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay described Independence Day as a moment to reflect on the sacrifices that shaped the nation’s freedom, stressing that it should never be taken for granted.
He encouraged residents to contribute to nation-building through simple civic actions such as keeping surroundings clean, planting trees, and helping one another, saying small efforts can lead to meaningful change.
In Zamboanga City, Mayor Khymer Olaso urged citizens to uphold the values of patriotism, courage, resilience, and excellence, while emphasizing investment in youth development, stronger community participation, and continued progress initiatives.
This year’s Independence Day celebrations are being observed under the theme “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,” highlighting the enduring legacy of national heroes and their role in securing the country’s freedom.
