The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has required all undergraduate and postgraduate programs in public and private universities in Pakistan to have a three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence course beginning with Fall 2026. The goal of this move is to develop AI competencies in students, improve the economy of the country and enhance the tech competence of Pakistan on the global scale.

HEC has directed all public and private universities to introduce a compulsory three-credit-hour AI course in every bachelor’s and master’s degree program. The change takes effect from the upcoming academic session, specifically Fall 2026.

HEC wants Pakistani students to gain modern technological skills. These skills help them compete in the global job market. The commission sees this as vital to strengthen the national economy and elevate Pakistan’s standing in technology.

Making AI a mandatory subject meets the current demand. Experts note that a skilled workforce drives innovation and pushes Pakistan ahead in the global technology race.

Professor Khalid Masood, the Pro Vice Chancellor of University of the Punjab, embraces the move. Mian Imran Masood, the leader of a privately owned university, also agrees with this. Both stress one key point. It is not just enough to add the subject to the curriculum.

The achievement depends on successful implementation. The universities should establish good relationships with the technology sector. They must provide real-life training that is in line with the requirements in the field.

This is reflected in the academic circles and stakeholders. Turn AI into something better than a requirement. Learn it by experience and research focus to provide actual outcomes.

The presence of this directive on compulsory AI education by the HEC is a sign of a significant change. Students in Pakistan will now be able to establish a basis in AI- based knowledge – regardless of their major.
