Gilani urges tolerance, rejects hate speech

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Jun, 2026) Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Thursday called for collective efforts to promote tolerance, harmony and mutual respect in society, saying hate speech poses a serious threat to social cohesion and democratic values.

In his message on the International Day for Countering Hate Speech (June 18), he said hate-driven narratives undermine peaceful coexistence and weaken the fabric of society.

He said Pakistan believes in diversity, interfaith harmony and equal respect for all communities, adding that the teachings of islam reject hatred, prejudice and discrimination while promoting peace, compassion and respect for humanity.

Gilani stressed the responsibility of parliamentarians, media outlets, educational institutions and civil society to actively discourage divisive narratives and promote constructive dialogue.

He also highlighted the need for responsible use of digital and social media platforms to counter misinformation and hate-based content.

Reaffirming the Senate’s commitment, he said the upper house of parliament stands for unity, inclusivity and democratic values, urging citizens to reject intolerance and work collectively for a peaceful and respectful society.
