Former PAEC Chairman passes away

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Jul, 2026) Former Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Mr. Parvez Butt, NI, HI, SI, passed away on Sunday at the age of 84.

Mr. Parvez Butt was the former Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and one of the founding members of Pakistan's Strategic and Nuclear Programme.

A distinguished mechanical engineer, scientist and administrator, he devoted over four decades of his life to strengthening Pakistan's nuclear science, technological and strategic capabilities. His visionary leadership, technical expertise and unwavering commitment to national service left an enduring imprint on the country's scientific and technological development.

Mr. Butt joined the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in May 1963 and served the organization with distinction for more than 43 years.

During his illustrious career, he held numerous scientific, engineering and management positions and made significant contributions to the development of Pakistan's indigenous nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear power programme, engineering and strategic capabilities. His efforts played an important role in advancing the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in healthcare, agriculture, industry, research and education, while contributing to the country's strategic and technological self-reliance.

In recognition of his distinguished leadership and exceptional professional accomplishments, Mr. Butt was appointed Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in 2001. During his tenure until his retirement in 2006, he provided strategic direction to the Commission and oversaw the continued expansion of Pakistan's nuclear science and technology programmes.

Following his retirement from PAEC, Mr. Butt continued to serve the nation in several important public offices. He served as Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, from 2006 to 2008 and subsequently as Advisor on Nuclear Energy at the Planning Commission of Pakistan until 2013. Until his passing, he continued to serve the nation as Advisor to the National Command Authority (NCA) and Strategic Plans Division (SPD), providing valuable guidance on strategic and nuclear matters.

His invaluable services to the nation were recognized by the conferment of Pakistan's highest civil honours, including the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1998, the Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 1999, and the Nishan-i-Imtiaz in 2015.
