Dubai’s skyline is about to look a little different. The world-famous Burj Al Arab has officially entered an 18-month hiatus. This marks the first major overhaul for the “seven-star” landmark since its grand opening in 1999.
While the Burj Al Arab closed recently, the goal isn’t a total makeover. Instead, the Jumeirah Group is focusing on a meticulous Burj Al Arab restoration. They aim to protect the building’s architectural soul while modernizing its ultra-luxury offerings.
Burj Al Arab Interior
Walking through the lobby, the sheer scale of gold leaf and Italian Statuario marble leaves you breathless. These features—along with the vibrant interior DNA—are staying. French interior architect Tristan Auer is leading the project. His mission is “invisible evolution.” He wants returning guests to feel the freshness without losing the familiarity of the royal palace atmosphere.
- 24-Carat Gold: The iconic leafing on columns and walls will be carefully restored.
- Artisanal Craft: 70% to 80% of the original décor will be retained to maintain sustainability.
- Modernized Flow: While the colorful lobby and entry aquarium remain, the spa and guest suites will see significant layout improvements.
The story of the Burj Al Arab started with an artificial island 280 meters off Jumeirah Beach. It took three years just to reclaim the land. Today, the 321-meter sail remains a feat of engineering. From its 200-meter high helipad—famous for Tiger Woods’ golf shots—to the 202 duplex suites, the structure is a masterclass in ambition.
“Jumeirah Burj Al Arab is more than a landmark; it is a symbol of craftsmanship and enduring excellence.” — Thomas B. Meier, Jumeirah CEO.
Burj Al Arab Restoration
The Burj Al Arab restoration is expected to conclude by late 2027. During this time, the hotel has stopped all operations, including its signature “underwater” dining experience at Al Mahara. While the Burj Al Arab closed for now, it ensures the icon stays relevant alongside newer giants like the Burj Khalifa.
The renovation promises to keep the 17-type pillow menu and rotating beds while upgrading the technology for a new generation of travelers. For those who consider this sail the heart of Dubai, the wait for its “new chapter” will be worth it.
