DG KHAN, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Jun, 2026) Authorities have intensified flood preparedness measures ahead of the monsoon season,
with senior officials reviewing the status of protective infrastructure, rescue arrangements
and inter-agency coordination to mitigate potential losses from flooding.
The review was conducted during a meeting chaired by Commissioner DG Khan Division
Ashfaq Ahmed Chaudhry on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner DG Khan Muhammad Usman Khalid,
Chief Engineer Irrigation Rana Zulfiqar Ali, Additional Commissioner Malik Kashif Awan,
CEO Health Dr Atiqur Rehman, CEO education, SE MEPCO Malik Khurshid, Director
Development Wasim Jatoi, Assistant Commissioner Saifullah Javed and other senior
officials. Deputy commissioners of Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu and Rajanpur, along with
the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Layyah, participated through video link.
Chief Engineer Irrigation Rana Zulfiqar Ali briefed the participants on flood protection
measures undertaken in DG Khan, Rajanpur, Layyah, Kot Addu and Muzaffargarh districts.
He outlined the strategy to tackle possible hill torrent flooding, progress on the reconstruction
of the Chandar Bhan flood embankment, and ongoing work on some other embankments
and spurs ahead of the monsoon season.
The meeting was informed that 35 out of 63 flood protection schemes had been completed,
while work on the remaining 28 projects was progressing rapidly and nearing completion.
Participants also reviewed measures to strengthen and safeguard protective embankments
along the Indus and Chenab rivers.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>Addressing the meeting, Commissioner Ashfaq Ahmed Chaudhry said DG Khan Division
remained Punjab’s most vulnerable region to flooding due to the combined threat of hill
torrents and river flows. He stressed the need for all departments to remain fully alert
and ensure comprehensive preparedness to deal with any emergency situation.
He directed the relevant departments to expedite construction and rehabilitation work
on flood embankments, spurs and other protective structures, and to complete all arrangements
well before the peak monsoon period. He also emphasized the early completion of the
Chandar Bhan flood bund near Head Panjnad in Alipur.
The commissioner further instructed authorities to take effective and timely measures
for the protection of embankments along the Indus and Chenab rivers. He directed the
Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), district administrations, Health Department,
Rescue 1122 and other relevant agencies to finalize a comprehensive strategy for flood
prevention, rescue and relief operations.
He said Rescue 1122 and other departments should focus on staff training, capacity building
and emergency preparedness, while the early warning system for hill torrent flooding should
be upgraded and made more effective.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Usman Khalid informed the meeting that the district administration
was fully alert and implementing precautionary measures to ensure the protection of lives and
property in the event of flooding.
