ASUNCIÓN: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June 30th, 2026) Paraguay declared a nationwide public holiday on Tuesday after its national football team secured a historic victory over Germany in the FIFA World Cup, eliminating the four-time champions in a dramatic penalty shootout.

President Santiago Peña announced June 30 as a national holiday to celebrate Paraguay's remarkable triumph, describing it as a proud moment for the nation.

Paraguay stunned Germany in the Round of 32 after prevailing in a tense penalty shootout, completing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. The South American side had reached the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams but went on to eliminate one of football's traditional powerhouses.

After both sides converted a series of spot-kicks under intense pressure, José Canale calmly scored the decisive penalty to send Paraguay through to the Round of 16.
