FIFA invites Iran to headquarters for World Cup talks

FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held in the United States.

FIFA has invited the Iranian Football Federation to its headquarters in Zurich for talks about Iran’s participation in this year’s World Cup.

Mehdi Taj, head of the Iranian federation, said the team’s participation depends on guarantees from FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

He said Iran strongly believes it should take part in the tournament, but a clear assurance is needed before making a final decision. He added that if such guarantees are given, Iran will participate, but if there are any insults, the team could withdraw.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Iran’s participation has been uncertain due to tensions in the Middle East following conflict involving the US and Israel earlier this year.

Sources said FIFA has asked the Iranian federation to visit Zurich by May 20 to prepare for the tournament. Earlier, Infantino confirmed that Iran will take part in the World Cup and will play its matches in the United States as planned.
