KARACHI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 30th Apr, 2026) The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced its support for the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to enhance water supply and distribution services across the city aimed at strengthening Karachi’s water infrastructure and ensuring improved civic services for millions of residents

A Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony was held between the KWSC and the EIB for the establishment of modern water filtration plants and the improvement of water distribution systems at key locations in Karachi, said a statement issued here on Thursday.

The agreement marks a significant step toward introducing sustainable and advanced solutions to address the city’s growing water needs.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor Karachi and Chairman KWSC, Barrister Murtaza Wahab. Managing Director KWSC, Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, and Head of Division of the European Investment Bank, Edvardas Bumsteinas, formally signed the MoU and reaffirmed their commitment to improving public utility services and civic infrastructure.

Under the initial phase of the partnership, state-of-the-art water filtration plants will be established at Gharo and Pipri pumping stations.

These modern facilities will incorporate advanced purification technology, professional design systems, and strict monitoring mechanisms to ensure effective treatment and maximum water supply efficiency for Karachi’s residents.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Karachi and Chairman KWSC Barrister Murtaza Wahab termed the agreement a highly encouraging development for the city and the country.

He said it was a matter of great significance that after a decade, the EIB has resumed investment in Pakistan, particularly in vital urban infrastructure and the water sector of Karachi.

He further stated that this collaboration would not only improve sustainable water supply services for the citizens of Karachi but would also introduce innovative and environmentally responsible technologies in the water sector.

He added that Karachi requires large-scale investment and international cooperation to meet its future water demands and modernize aging infrastructure.

Murtaza expressed optimism for continued collaboration with the EIB and said further support in the water sector could significantly increase KWSC’s service capacity, operational efficiency, and ability to deliver clean drinking water to more areas of the metropolis.

Officials present at the ceremony included Secretary Local Government Sindh Waseem Shamshad, Managing Director KWSC Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, Chief Operating Officer Asadullah Khan, Chief Financial Officer Ammar Ali Khan, PChief Communication Officer Navied Siddiqui and senior government officials, and representatives from the European Investment Bank.

The partnership is being viewed as a major milestone in Karachi’s journey toward sustainable urban development and a stronger, more resilient water supply system for its growing population.
