ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Jun, 2026) Experts on Tuesday expressed concern over the rising burden of diabetes in Pakistan, attributing it to lifestyle changes and low physical activity, while acknowledging government efforts to improve prevention and healthcare response.
Speaking to ptv news, diabetes expert Dr Maryum Aziz warned that its rapid rise is strongly linked to unhealthy lifestyle habits, including poor diet, physical inactivity, and stress.
She said the growing burden of diabetes has placed the country among the top three nations globally, with nearly 33 million people currently affected, adding that the situation demands urgent attention as cases continue to rise across all age groups.
She urged people to adopt healthier lifestyles, including regular physical activity and balanced nutrition, and emphasized that early screening and awareness are essential to control the spread of the disease and reduce long-term health complications.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>Renowned consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology, Dr Asjad Hameed, said that diabetes continues to be a growing health challenge that requires collective efforts for effective control and management.
He noted that the government is making sincere efforts to address the disease burden by providing free-of-cost treatment facilities under the Sehat Sahulat Program, enabling patients to access quality healthcare services without financial pressure.
Dr Hameed emphasized that the media and public must play their due role in raising awareness, promoting early diagnosis, and encouraging timely treatment, as early intervention remains key to preventing serious complications associated with diabetes.
He further noted that more than one-third of cases remain undiagnosed, placing it among the highest proportions globally, which highlights the urgent need for widespread screening and awareness.
