PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Mar, 2026) Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud has taken strict notice of incidents of mistreatment of
animals in different localities of Peshawar and has issued instructions to the relevant institutions to take
immediate action.
According to details, Lubna Tajik, a female social worker working for animal rights, complained to the Commissioner Peshawar Division and informed that some shopkeepers who buy and sell animals in Kohati Chowk, Gulbahar and Bacha Khan Chowk areas of Peshawar treat the animals badly.
Taking notice of the complaint, Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud convened a meeting in his office, which was attended by Assistant Commissioner Peshawar City Zeeshan Najeeb, officers of the Livestock Department and Wildlife Department.
In the meeting, the Commissioner Peshawar Division directed the Assistant Commissioner Peshawar City to immediately inspect the shops selling and buying animals in Kohati Chowk, Gulbahar and Bacha Khan Chowk along with officers from the Wildlife Department and Livestock Department and take strict legal action against those who are cruel to animals under the Animal Welfare Act 2024.
The Commissioner Peshawar Division further directed that a meeting be held in this regard with shopkeepers and officers of the concerned departments in which regular SOPs should be prepared so that such incidents can be prevented in the future.
He also directed that an awareness campaign be launched to create awareness among the public so that those involved in the purchase and sale of animals should refrain from inhumane treatment of animals.
The Commissioner Peshawar Division directed the concerned authorities to submit a report on the action taken in this regard within 72 hours.
