MULTAN, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 6th May, 2026) In a major push to address Multan’s chronic sewerage and drainage issues,Commissioner Multan Aamir Karim Khan on Wednesday directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to prepare a comprehensive master plan covering the city’s requirements for the next 40 to 50 years.
Chairing a high-level meeting on urban infrastructure, the commissioner said temporary measures were no longer viable and instructed WASA to submit long-term development schemes aimed at complete upgradation of the sewerage network and water supply system.
He also decided to forward a formal summary to the Punjab government seeking sustained support for resolving the city’s persistent civic infrastructure problems, stressing the need for a modern drainage system capable of handling rapid urban expansion and rising population pressure.
Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan directed immediate replacement of outdated and dysfunctional sewer lines and called for practical steps to eliminate sewer overflows, blocked drains and persistent waterlogging across the city.
He further ordered authorities to ensure the drainage system is fully functional ahead of the upcoming monsoon season to prevent urban flooding.
The commissioner emphasized transforming Multan’s sewerage and water supply networks on modern lines, particularly in newly developed residential areas and aligning infrastructure development with future growth requirements.
Officials briefed the meeting that sewerage and water supply coverage in the city remains partial despite ongoing initiatives, leaving a significant portion of the population without adequate services.
The WASA managing director said a large part of the sewerage network has become obsolete, while work under the Punjab Development Program (PDP) was underway to address key deficiencies.
He added that disposal stations and trunk sewers are operating beyond capacity, resulting in frequent overflows and system failures.
WASA also presented proposals for replacing aging sewer lines, laying new networks and expanding services to newly urbanized localities.
Plans for improved storm water management were also discussed to reduce flooding risks during heavy rains.
The commissioner appreciated the Punjab government’s development allocations under initiatives spearheaded by Chief Minister(CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif, saying the funds must translate into visible and long-term relief for citizens.
Reaffirming his commitment to urban reform, Aamir Karim Khan directed WASA to finalize a comprehensive action plan for sustainable solutions to Multan’s sewerage, drainage and water supply challenges.
