KARACHI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th May, 2026) Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi visited the camp established for vaccination of nomad children and chaired a meeting to review the polio booster doses campaign 11-24 May at his office on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso and Coordinator of the Commissioner Polio Task Force Saud Yaqoob briefed the Commissioner about the progress of campaign .
The campaign would continue until 24 May. Along with administering oral polio drops, children up to 10 years old were also being given polio booster doses through a painless needle-free jet injector.
The Commissioner was informed that 43 percent of children were vaccinated in the initial six days.
The campaign was aimed to vaccinate 21 lakh 92,000 children up to 10 years old.
According to an environmental survey, polio virus was circulating in 89 union councils of Karachi.
Various strategies were being adopted to eliminate polio virus from Karachi. The number of missed and refusal has decreased.
The Karachi administration, in collaboration with the Emergency Operations Centre and UNICEF, has included nomadic children in the vaccination campaign.
Special arrangements have been made to vaccinate nomadic children to achieve the target for missed and refusing children.
This was the first initiative of its kind, and it was expected to further reduce the number of missed children.
Later, the Commissioner visited a vaccination camp for nomadic children at Lilly Bridge, Saddar Sub-Division, along with Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso, Coordinator of the Commissioner Polio Task Force, Assistant Commissioner Saddar Ghazanfar Pardakh and the District Health Officer South, and reviewed the vaccination arrangements.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>The Commissioner was informed that UNICEF’s partner Shifa Foundation is supporting the plan to vaccinate nomadic children plan.
On this occasion, Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso, Coordinator of the Commissioner Karachi Polio Task Force Saud Yaqoob, Assistant Commissioner Saddar Ghazanfar Pardakh, and a team of doctors from the Health Department were also present on this ocassion.
The Commissioner was informed that the target was to administer oral polio drops to 6,897 nomadic children up to 10 years old, while the target for polio booster doses for 6,510 children aged 4 months to 10 years has been set.
The Commissioner Karachi Office has released details of the campaign that started on 11 May.
According to the details 21,92,000 children would be vaccinated through oral polio drops of which 43 percent coverage was achieved in six days.
For polio booster doses, the target was 21,30,000 children, and 41 percent of the target was achieved in six days.
The Commissioner was informed that children in 89 high-risk union councils are being vaccinated in this campaign. More than 5,300 polio workers were working in the campaign.
Special safety measures have been taken, and over 3,000 police personnel have been deployed.
