Commissioner chairs grand coordination meeting to ensure peace and harmony during Muharram

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Jun, 2026) Commissioner Peshawar Division, Riaz Khan Mehsud chaired a Grand Coordination Meeting here aimed at ensuring peace and security during Muharram-ul-Haram, promoting inter-sect harmony and eliminating sectarianism.

According to the Commissioner Office on Wednesday, the meeting, organized under the platform of the United Ulema board, brought together more than 100 prominent religious scholars, faith leaders and government officials.

The participants included Deputy Commander 102 Brigade Colonel Naveed, Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Captain (R) Sanaullah, WSSP Chief Executive Officer Yasir Ali Khan, senior police officials, municipal officers and representatives of relevant departments.

Religious scholars representing all major schools of thought including Shia, Sunni, Ahl-e-Hadith, Barelvi, and Tablighi groups as well as leaders from the Hindu, Sikh and Christian communities attended the gathering.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, strengthening religious harmony and promoting brotherhood during Muharram. They pledged to discourage sectarianism, avoid provocative speeches and exercise responsibility on social media and other public platforms.

The meeting emphasized that no anti-state or disruptive elements would be allowed to disturb law and order.

The attendees described the government's initiative of bringing representatives of all sects and religions under one platform as a historic and revolutionary step.

They expressed confidence that this united forum would continue to play a vital role in promoting religious harmony, national unity, and lasting peace.

Several practical suggestions were presented by religious scholars and participants to further strengthen security and public order during Muharram, and consensus was reached on implementing these recommendations.

Addressing the gathering, Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud thanked the religious leaders for demonstrating unity and national solidarity. He urged scholars to dedicate Friday sermons to messages of peace, tolerance, brotherhood and the elimination of sectarianism in order to foster social cohesion.

The Commissioner also directed authorities to ensure equal security and administrative arrangements for all religious gatherings, processions and events organized by different schools of thought.

He announced that he would personally oversee Muharram arrangements to ensure a peaceful environment for citizens.

The meeting concluded with a collective pledge that peace, unity, tolerance and national solidarity are essential for a strong and stable Pakistan and that all segments of society will work together to observe Muharram in an atmosphere of mutual respect, brotherhood and religious harmony.
