KARACHI: In view of growing criticism and widespread inconvenience to hundreds of thousands of commuters daily, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, while “apologising” to the people of Karachi, has announced that the deteriorated University Road will be reconstructed within 90 days.

Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah, while apologising to Karachi residents, said that the road will be rebuilt as a separate provincial project and not as part of the under-construction Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line.

University Road has remained under constant criticism from commuters and residents due to damaged road conditions, traffic bottlenecks, and delays linked to the BRT Red Line project, which is being developed with funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

He said the provincial government had decided to undertake the road reconstruction independently and not as part of the Red Line scheme. According to the mayor, the plan is to rebuild the section of University Road used by regular traffic from Safoora Chowrangi to Numaish so that commuters can continue to use the route while work on the BRT project goes on.

Wahab said the scheme would include road construction as well as installation of a proper drainage system to help ensure smoother traffic movement.

It may be noted that the Sindh government had recently cancelled the contract of a firm constructing the Red Line corridor from Mosamiyat to Numaish due to the slow pace of work and unsatisfactory performance.

Days earlier, the chief minister had also expressed embarrassment over the inconvenience being caused to road users because of delays in completing the BRT Red Line along University Road.
