LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 13th May, 2026) Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that more than 5,000 labourers would be provided houses within the next three years, along with three-marla plots and easy loans for house construction.
Addressing a ceremony held for the distribution of 720 free apartments among workers, here on Wednesday, the chief minister congratulated the beneficiaries and termed the provision of shelter to labourers a major welfare initiative.
She said it was a matter of great satisfaction that workers had been blessed with their own homes and would no longer have to face difficulties related to rented accommodation. She said that in the prevailing economic conditions, it was difficult for ordinary families even to manage household expenses, let alone save money for constructing or purchasing a house.
CM Maryam Nawaz said owning a house provided security and stability to families, regardless of whether they were rich or poor. She added that each apartment had been constructed at a cost of Rs3.5 million and was being provided completely free of cost to workers.
The CM said the apartments comprised two bedrooms, a lounge and a washroom, adding that no amount had been charged from the beneficiaries. She said the foundation laid by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the labour sector decades ago had now grown into a strong welfare system. She added that Nawaz Sharif was extremely pleased over the handing over of house keys to 720 deserving families.
The chief minister said a labourer earning Rs40,000 per month often had to choose between paying rent and fulfilling the needs of children, adding that the government was striving to ease the hardships of workers by providing free housing facilities.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>She said that while 720 families had received apartments, another 500 houses had already been completed in Taxila. She reiterated that more than 5,000 workers would be provided houses during the next three years.
CM Maryam Nawaz further announced that workers without land would also be provided three-marla residential plots along with easy loans for house construction.
Highlighting the progress of the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” programme, she said more than 100,000 houses had been completed within just over a year, while 65,000 houses were currently under construction. She expressed confidence that the target of 500,000 houses would be achieved within the next three-and-a-half years.
The chief minister termed the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” scheme and “Suthra Punjab” initiative successful public welfare models and said the government was committed to extending housing facilities to every deserving family.
She further said ration cards had been issued to 1.5 million workers under a Rs40 billion programme, through which labourers were being provided financial assistance of Rs3,000 per month.
The chief minister also directed the authorities concerned to ensure provision of safety gear for workers at construction sites in order to safeguard their lives and wellbeing. She said governments were elected to bring ease and relief to the lives of people and prayed for the ability to continue serving the underprivileged segments of society.
