Climate change witnessed as major threat to KP economy, financial stability: Report

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Jun, 2026) Climate change and natural disasters have witnessed as significant threats to the economy and financial stability of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said a recent assessment report.

The report states that the province, one of Pakistan’s key agricultural regions, is being directly affected by the impacts of climate change, resulting in continuous losses to agricultural production, infrastructure and business activities.

According to the findings, unusually heavy rainfall, flash floods and cloudburst incidents over the past year caused widespread destruction across several districts of the province.

The disasters severely affected the agricultural sector, while the production of major crops, including wheat, recorded a noticeable decline, raising concerns about food security and economic stability.

The report further revealed that thousands of acres of farmland were washed away by floodwaters, destroying crops and causing substantial financial losses to farmers.

In addition, thousands of houses suffered complete or partial damage, while roads, bridges, irrigation systems and other public infrastructure were also badly affected.

The impact of natural disasters extended beyond agriculture, disrupting business activities and dealing a significant blow to the local economy.

The report highlighted that recurring natural disasters are forcing the provincial government to divert a large portion of development funds toward emergency relief operations, rehabilitation of affected communities and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.

Experts warn that without effective climate adaptation strategies, modern water management systems, afforestation initiatives and other climate resilience measures, the province could face even greater economic and social challenges in the years ahead.
