Case ordered against police over 'torture' of JI workers

An administrative Anti-Terrorism Court has issued a significant order directing the registration of a case against police officials for allegedly torturing workers of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) who were arrested during a protest outside the Sindh Assembly.

The hearing was held at the Anti-Terrorism Complex located inside Karachi Central Jail.

In the petition, the lawyer argued that under Section 5, Sub-Section 2 of the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) Act, 2022, the court should order an investigation into alleged custodial torture. He maintained that the medico-legal reports confirmed that the arrested workers were subjected to police torture.

According to the petition, the police presented the detained workers before a judicial magistrate after subjecting them to severe physical abuse. The injured workers reportedly suffered fractures and head injuries due to the alleged torture.

After reviewing the matter, the administrative Anti-Terrorism Court ordered that a case be registered regarding the alleged police torture of the Jamaat-e-Islami workers arrested during the protest outside the Sindh Assembly. In its order, the court directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate and register a case against the concerned police officers and personnel. Following the court's order, the FIA will register an FIR against the relevant officers and personnel of Aram Bagh police station.
