BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia denies claims that the third ODI against England at Lord’s would be Rohit Sharma’s final international appearance in the 50-over format

NEW DELHI: (UrduPoint /UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 18th, 2026) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rejected media reports suggesting that veteran opener Rohit Sharma is set to retire from One-Day Internationals, insisting that no such discussions have taken place within the board.

The Indian media reported that BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia denied claims that the third ODI against England at Lord’s would be Rohit Sharma’s final international appearance in the 50-over format.

Saikia said there had been no discussion within the board regarding the Indian captain’s retirement and described the reports as baseless. He added that Rohit remains a key member of India’s ODI squad and continues to be an important part of the team’s plans.

“As long as Rohit Sharma is part of the team’s strategy, he will continue to represent India,” Saikia said, adding that the squad’s full focus is currently on the crucial ODI against England rather than speculation over individual players’ futures.

The clarification came after sections of the Indian media claimed that selectors had begun planning for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup without the experienced opener, leading to speculation that the Lord’s ODI could be his final match in international cricket.

The rumours gained momentum after Rohit’s modest performances in the opening two ODIs against England. The right-handed batter scored 11 runs in the first match and followed it up with 26 in the second, prompting questions about his form and long-term future in the national side.

Despite the speculation, the BCCI has reiterated that Rohit Sharma remains an integral part of India’s ODI setup, dismissing reports of an imminent retirement.
