Assessment of Glacier-Induced Flood Risks in Pershing Valley; Immediate Protective Measures Ordered

ASTORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Jul, 2026) Director General of the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) conducted a detailed visit to Pershing Valley to assess potential flood risks caused by glacier melting.

The Deputy Commissioner Astore and the Assistant Director of the District Disaster Management Authority accompanied him during the visit.

During the inspection, the Director General closely examined vulnerable and high-risk locations along both banks of the Pershing stream. He directed the concerned technical staff to ensure immediate protective measures, including the deployment of heavy machinery, construction of temporary embankments using sandbags, and installation of gabion walls to minimize the risk of flooding.

He also instructed the Deputy Commissioner Astore to ensure that the Communication and Works (C&W) Department prepares a comprehensive proposal under the upcoming Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the construction of permanent concrete protection walls to provide sustainable rehabilitation and long-term protection to the affected area.

Later, a meeting of the Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) Committee was held in Ramkha to strengthen coordination between the local community and emergency response agencies. The participants discussed preparedness for possible emergencies, timely dissemination of information, and enhanced coordination for an effective disaster response.
