Artists, scholars reflect on Karbala's timeless legacy

The Lahore Arts Council (Alhamra) organised a special programme titled "The Expression of Karbala in the Arts" to mark the sacred month of Muharram, bringing together scholars, artists, poets and intellectuals to discuss the enduring influence of Karbala on literature, visual arts and culture.

The event highlighted the universal message of Karbala as a symbol of truth, justice, sacrifice and resistance against oppression.

Speakers emphasized that the legacy of Imam Hussain (AS) continues to inspire artistic and literary expression more than thirteen centuries after the historic event.

The panel featured Principal of the National College of Arts Dr Murtaza Jafri, renowned poet Abbas Tabish and noted actor Waseem Abbas, while acclaimed playwright and scholar Dr Asghar Nadeem Syed moderated the discussion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Asghar Nadeem Syed said Karbala remains one of history's most powerful symbols of courage, patience and moral conviction. He noted that its themes of sacrifice and resistance have enriched literature and art across generations.

Dr Murtaza Jafri described art as a divine gift and said the imagery and symbolism of Karbala have profoundly influenced many artists, including the celebrated painter Sadequain.

He termed Karbala a defining moment in human civilisation that continues to shape moral and cultural thought.

Poet Abbas Tabish highlighted the role of elegiac poetry in preserving the message of Karbala, describing it as an everlasting metaphor for the struggle between truth and falsehood.
