MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Apr, 2026) Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday observed World Malaria Day with an awareness drive aimed at educating the public on prevention and timely treatment of the mosquito-borne disease, health officials said.

According to state health authorities, an awareness walk was organized by the CDC Division of the District Health Department Mirpur. The walk began from the DHO office and concluded at the same location after passing through major city roads, with participants carrying banners and placards highlighting malaria prevention and free treatment services. This year’s global theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now we can, Now we must,” was prominently displayed during the event.

The walk was led by District Health Officer Dr. Fida Hussain Raja and Additional District Health Officer Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Fazaldad, and attended by health officials, WHO representatives, and members of civil society.

Speakers on the occasion noted that malaria remains a major global health challenge, with approximately 280 million cases and around 600,000 deaths reported annually, particularly affecting children under five.

Health experts stressed that early diagnosis and preventive measures such as using mosquito nets, maintaining screened living spaces, and applying mosquito repellents are essential to reducing transmission. They urged people experiencing symptoms such as high fever, chills, headaches, nausea, and body pain to seek immediate medical attention at nearby health facilities for free testing and treatment.

Officials further warned that delays in treatment can lead to serious complications, weakened immunity, and long-term health impacts, especially among children, emphasizing the importance of sustained public awareness and preventive action.
