PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th Feb, 2026) Local administrations have been advised to review contingency plans, ensure early warning dissemination and prepare evacuation arrangements where necessary due to risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).
According to National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) of NDMA, there is risk of potential GLOF risks from March to September 2026 due to anticipated rise in temperatures, changing weather patterns and possible early heat wave conditions in northern Pakistan.
Communities in vulnerable are urged to stay vigilant, follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary movement near glacial streams and comply with instructions from local authorities.
Seasonal projections indicate that increasing temperatures during March to June 2026 may accelerate snow and glacier melt in Gilgit Baltistan and Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa heightening the risk of GLOF incidents.
Such events can trigger flash floods, causing damage to homes, infrastructure, agriculture, communication networks, and may result in human casualties in vulnerable downstream communities.
The public is encouraged to remain updated through official NDMA platforms, media channels and the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application for timely information and guidance.
