2 robbers held after firing at police in New Town encounter

RAWALPINDI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th May, 2026) Police have arrested two armed robbers, including one injured in an exchange of fire, when they opened fire on a police party in the New Town area.

According to a police spokesman, the incident occurred when a police team signalled two motorcyclists to stop during routine checking. Instead of complying, the suspects opened fire on the police and attempted to flee.

The police retaliated and, after a brief exchange of fire, apprehended both robbers, one of whom sustained injuries during the encounter.

The police also recovered a stolen motorcycle and weapons from their possession.

Initial investigation revealed that the motorcycle recovered from the accused had been stolen from the New Town area.

The arrested suspects are reportedly hardened criminals with previous involvement in multiple cases of robbery, vehicle theft, narcotics and illegal arms, and have a criminal record.

On receiving information about the incident, senior police officers rushed to the scene along with a heavy police contingent and reviewed the situation.

City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Syed Khalid Hamdani commended Superintendent of Police (SP) Rawal and the New Town Police team for their courage in confronting the armed suspects despite intense firing and successfully arresting them while recovering the stolen motorcycle and weapons.
