12 arrested in crackdown on illegal gold mining along Indus River in Jand

ATTOCK, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th May, 2026) A major crackdown on illegal gold placer mining along the Indus River in Jand tehsil led to the arrest of 12 individuals and the seizure of heavy machinery on Saturday, officials said.

The operation targeted unlawful extraction activities in the areas of Dandi Jiswal and adjoining localities. Assistant Commissioner Jand Ahmad Ali Raza took action after reports surfaced regarding illegal gold placer extraction from river sediments.

The seized items included six excavators, two strainers, three generators, and other mining tools. Police registered four separate cases against the accused and initiated further investigation. Local residents welcomed the crackdown and urged the tehsil administration to extend it to other areas of Jand tehsil where illegal gold placer mining is reportedly continuing.

They said the operation was needed to curb activities that could disrupt public order. Citizens expressed concern that unchecked movement of outsiders in these areas may pose security risks. They called for permanent monitoring and strict enforcement measures to prevent illegal mining operations from resuming.
