ICT anti-begging drive: 53 beggars arrested, in late-night operation

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th Jun, 2026) The Islamabad district administration intensified its anti-begging campaign and arrested 53 beggars in different parts of the Federal capital.

During a late-night operation, 30 beggars were taken into custody and shifted to a police lockup by the Assistant Commissioner City, while 13 arrests were made in Shalimar and 10 in the Industrial Area.

Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Memon has directed all assistant commissioners to further accelerate the campaign and conduct daily operations in their respective areas.

The district administration launched the crackdown as part of its ongoing efforts to curb professional begging and improve public spaces across the city. Officials carried out operations in various sectors, markets, roads, and public places where professional beggars were reported to be active.

According to the administration, Assistant Commissioner City led a late-night operation that resulted in the arrest of 30 individuals involved in begging. They were shifted to the lockup for legal action. Separate operations were conducted by Assistant Commissioner Shalimar and Assistant Commissioner Industrial Area, leading to the arrest of 13 and 10 beggars respectively.

The DC reviewed the progress of the campaign and instructed all assistant commissioners to continue strict action against begging on a daily basis. He said the administration would maintain regular operations to discourage the practice and address public complaints regarding the presence of professional beggars in different areas of the city.

He emphasized that the campaign would remain active and that field officers should ensure continuous monitoring in their jurisdictions. He directed officials to identify locations where professional beggars frequently gather and take action in accordance with the law.

Irfan Memon also appealed to residents to support the administration in its efforts to eliminate professional begging. He said public cooperation is essential for achieving lasting results and making the campaign successful.

He urged citizens not to encourage professional beggars by providing money at roadsides, markets, traffic signals, and other public places. Instead, he encouraged residents to report such activities to the relevant authorities so that appropriate action can be taken.

The DC said the city could be made free of professional begging through collective efforts by both the administration and the public. He called on citizens to help identify individuals involved in organized begging networks and assist authorities in discouraging the practice.

The district administration reiterated its commitment to continuing the anti-begging drive and ensuring that daily operations are carried out across Islamabad to address the issue effectively.
