Cabinet Committee meets religious leaders to strengthen Muharram peace efforts

The Punjab Cabinet Committee on Law and Order held a meeting with members of the Peace Committee and religious scholars at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Bahawalpur to discuss security arrangements, inter-sect harmony, and measures to ensure the peaceful observance of Muharram-ul-Haram

BAHAWALPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Jun, 2026) The Punjab Cabinet Committee on Law and Order held a meeting with members of the Peace Committee and religious scholars at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Bahawalpur to discuss security arrangements, inter-sect harmony, and measures to ensure the peaceful observance of Muharram-ul-Haram.

The meeting was attended by Provincial Minister and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee Khawaja Salman Rafique, Provincial Minister and Co-Chairman Bilal Yaseen, Member of the National Assembly and Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Railways MNA Muhammad Usman Owaisi, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi, Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Irfan Ali Kathia, Regional Police Officer Ghazi Muhammad Salahuddin, Deputy Commissioners, District Police Officers, and other senior officials.

During the session, members of the Peace Committee and prominent religious scholars expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made by the administration for Muharram-ul-Haram. They acknowledged that all relevant departments and institutions were working diligently to provide a secure and peaceful environment for mourners and participants in religious gatherings and processions. The participants also appreciated the Punjab Government’s efforts to promote inter-sect harmony and strengthen cooperation among followers of different schools of thought, describing such initiatives as essential for maintaining peace and social cohesion.

Speaking on the occasion, Khawaja Salman Rafique said that members of peace committees and religious scholars played a pivotal role in fostering interfaith and inter-sect harmony. He noted that the Punjab Government was utilizing all available resources to ensure foolproof security arrangements and provide every possible facility to mourners during Muharram.

He emphasized that mutual respect, tolerance, and religious harmony were the foundations of lasting peace and called upon all segments of society to continue working together to preserve the province’s tradition of peaceful coexistence.

Provincial Minister Bilal Yaseen expressed confidence that, through unity and cooperation among all schools of thought, Muharram-ul-Haram would be observed peacefully across the region. He stated that the government and district administrations remained fully engaged, in collaboration with religious scholars and peace committees, to maintain law and order and facilitate religious activities.

Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Irfan Ali Kathia commended the efforts of the Divisional Peace Committee and praised its members for their valuable contribution to promoting peace, harmony, and communal understanding throughout the division.

Members of the Peace Committee highlighted the initiatives undertaken by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to promote inter-sect unity and support the welfare of mosque imams and religious leaders. They described these efforts as significant steps toward strengthening religious harmony and social stability.

The participants reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a peaceful Muharram across Bahawalpur Division and stated that representatives of all schools of thought, religious scholars, and administrative authorities were working in close coordination to achieve this objective.

Committee members also informed the meeting that they had been conducting joint visits with administrative officials to procession routes and places of worship to personally review arrangements and identify any issues requiring attention before the commencement of Muharram.
